Meditation requires a calm and soothing place.It is a special place which you will need to identify in your home. Ambient environments where you have flowing water or plants with free-flowing air makes it an ideal location to meditate.
Setting up the Meditation Environment
It would be ideal if you could create a small space in your home having the soothing environment discussed above. However it may not be possible to build such an environment. The alternatives are to create a similar setting by using a poster or painting of scenic background on the wall. Anything that helps in providing a peaceful and calm atmosphere can be used in the location.
It is important to have the correct amount of light entering the location for meditation. Depending on whether you like bright lights or dim lights you can use curtains or meditate at different times of the day.
If the meditation location is filled with a lot of things it becomes clutter. It is important to find the correct balance between what we need and what we want in the room. Having sufficient things will help us improve our concentration where as clutter can distract us.
Choosing the Right Mat
The mat you use for meditation is where you spend most of your time. It must be comfortable to sit on for long periods of time. By meditating directly on the floor you are bound to become uncomfortable after a while.
Choosing the Right Scent
Use of incense sticks or scented candles really provides a pleasant setting to meditate. You can also use essential oils of your choice. The incense stick or the candles can be light in advance so that the smoke clears and when you enter the room you are surrounded by the scent only.
Bring in the Air
Fresh air into the room is always helpful in breathing. It is of utmost importance that you are able to control the air flow into the room. Too much air and you may feel chilly which will distract you and too less makes you uncomfortable which does the same. Striking the balance is vital.
The room must be clean and hygienic. A room that is not clean demotivates us and indirectly affects our concentration.
Enhance the Auditory Experience
Use white noise of flowing water playing to replicate being outdoors. Any other soothing sounds can also be used like ASMR.
Keeping Technology Out
The whole purpose of creating this environment is to escape from the reality where we are bombarded by technology like Phones, tablets and computers. It would be disaster if we bring in our phone into this environment. Constant notifications on the device will negate the whole experience we have created. If you are using the device solely for creating the environment like playing ASMR or white noise that would be an
exception to the case. Creating a meditation space is a very personal experience which varies from person to person. There is no one size fits all approach to this. It is specifically up to the person to understand what helps him relax and to then create such an environment.
