Beriberi is a nutrient deficiency disease which is caused by a deficiency of one of the B complex vitamins i.e. Thiamine. It can be a cause of death in infants and in some adults. It affects the nervous and cardiovascular system. This disease can be easily prevented by little modification in the diet.
There are two types of Beriberi- wet and dry.
Wet beriberi is associated with symptoms related to the cardiovascular system. This results in heart failure and edema.
Dry beriberi, on the other hand, is associated with the nerves. There is degradation of the long nerves first of the legs followed by other areas.
This disease is endemic in areas where white rice is a staple as the thiamine content of white rice is lost during milling and later it is not fortified.
