Let’s discuss about a very simple ingredient which was often used in every household and now, is usually ignored. I am talking about is Asafoetida which is commonly known as hing.
Asafoetida is used as a flavoring agent in food and as a traditional medicine for many diseases in many parts of the world. It is said to have originated in Rome, and despite not being a native of India, it has been used in Indian medicine and cookery for ages.
Our elders spoke a lot about the benefits it has and we have always seemed to ignore it. Asafoetida is an ingredient which can become a super food if given attention.
Let’s look at its health benefits and know together what this simple ingredient can do.
NEUROPROTECTIVE EFFECT:Asafoetida can exert some effect on the nervous system particularly in neuroprotective and nerve stimulating effect. It has the ability to act as a nerve stimulant.
MEMORY ENHANCING ACTIVITY:
Asafoetida has a memory improving activity. Loss of memory is the first symptom to manifest in majority of the people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease around the world. Consumption of asafoetida has seen to improve the memory and reduce this symptom in people suffering from Alzheimer’s.
DIGESTIVE ENZYME ACTIVITY:
In general spices have been considered to strengthen salivary flow and gastric juice secretion and support in digestion. The digestive stimulating action of the spice(s) is most likely through a stimulation of activities of enzymatic participate digestion. Asafoetida is one of these spices that improves digestion.
Asafoetida is seen to have blood pressure lowering effect. For people suffering from hypertension, it can be very beneficial if taken in moderate amounts.

Now let me share a recipe containing this magic pill.
Split Yellow Gram(MOONG DAL) TOAST:
3/4 cup yellow moong dal (split yellow gram)
1 1/2 tbsp. roughly chopped green chilies
1/4 cup finely chopped cabbage
1/4 cup finely chopped onions
1/4 tsp pinch asafoetida (hing)
1 tbsp. besan (Bengal gram flour)
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp lemon juice
1 tbsp. finely chopped coriander (dhania)
Salt to taste
10 bread slices
Oil for greasing and cooking
Mix the yellow moong dal and enough water in a deep bowl and keep aside to soak for 2 hours. Drain well.
Combine the soaked yellow moong dal and green chilies in a mixer and blend to a coarse mixture using approx. ¼ cup of water.
Transfer the mixture into a deep bowl, add the cabbage, onions, asafoetida, besan, baking soda, lemon juice, coriander and salt and mix well. Divide the mixture into 10 equal portions.
Place a bread slice on a clean, dry surface and spread a portion of the mixture evenly over it.
Heat a non-stick pan and grease it with oil.
Place each open sandwich on the pan with the topping side facing downwards and cook using oil, till it turns golden brown in color from both the sides.
Cut each toast into 2 diagonally. Serve immediately with tomato ketchup.
